Hearts Card Game

Hearts is a popular card game that has been collecting fans ever since its creation at the end of the 19th century. Now, this growth is even more notorious as the card game made its transition to the virtual world and is now an online game too.

What makes it so special is that it is the opposite of traditional trick-taking games in the sense that your goal is to avoid taking tricks if they contain any Hearts card. The player with fewer points wins the game. In other words, you play to “lose”!

How to play Hearts online

This card game uses a standard 52-card deck. Each player receives 13 cards. After looking at their hand, they must select 3 cards to pass to one of the other players. They first pass it to the player on their right, then on their left, then in front of them, and in the 4th round, they keep the cards they are dealt.

The player with the 2 of Clubs starts the game with a Clubs card (not necessarily the 2). The players must follow suit, if they cannot, they may play any other card. A Heart card or the Queen of Spades cannot be played in the first trick, even if the player does not have clubs. The highest card of the opening suit wins the trick.

Hearts cannot open a trick until a card of this suit has been played.

The player with the least amount of points when another reaches 100 points, wins the game.

Scoring

Hearts is a trick avoidance game and is normally played to a limit of 100 points. Once one or more players reach or cross the 100 thresholds, the game comes to an end. The player with the least amount of points is crowned the winner.

At the end of each round, the players must check the collected tricks. Each Hearts card is worth 1 point. The Queen of Spades is the most dreaded card as it is worth 13 points.

However, if a player manages to collect all scoring cards (all the Hearts plus the Queen of Spades), that player will get 0 points while all adversaries will get 26 points added to their score.

Playing against other players

This Hearts online game has two game modes available: vs Artificial Intelligence and multiplayer. By default, you always start the game competing against computer-controlled opponents.

If you wish to play against real players, head to the multiplayer lobby in the top left corner. Here you can choose to join a table already waiting for players or create one yourself.

If you like this game, you may also like Spades.
